Vlogging: This is How We Roll.

A vlog, or video blog, is a blog post that contains video content. Sounds simple. Making one? Not so simple.

But vlogs are invading the book blogging blogosphere (Say that 3x fast!) like crazy. They come in handy for talking about all things related to books - and for sharing squeals of excitement, bloopers and even pets (I've seen some really cute puppies.).  Mostly they're used for memes such as, and most notably, In My Mailbox. You know you've seen 'em or have made one.

I haven't taken that extra step yet. I actually haven't been convinced that vlogging is the way to go. Is it necessary? Do other bloggers prefer it to regular posts? Why?

So that's where you guys come in. I wanna know: do you prefer vlogs to regular posts? Why or why not? (I know, that sounds like an essay question. Ew.)

*As if it wasn't obvious enough, I'm trying to decide whether I should incorporate vlogs on the blog. I'd really appreciate your feedback!

  1. I like both!

Vlogs are a fantastic way to get to know the blogger better. You can see their personality and I think that makes them more memorabel - being able to put a face with the blog name.

I also like getting to see the book in a vide versus just a picture of the cover. I think it gives you a real feel for the book.

However, vlogs take a lot of time. I can spend hours making, editing, and posting just a 6 minute video! Plus, you have to be interesting and not look bored, or the video will be boring.

Sometimes i do a vlog, and sometimes I don't! All that to say that I love vlogs, but not posting a vlog is ok too. :)

  2. Here's my thing, if you're gonna do a vlog, at least make it super interesting! I'm afraid to click on them sometimes because they are 8 minutes long and I can't imagine what the blogger is talking about for 8 minutes...unless it's a captivating, action packed 8 minutes!!

  3. Sometimes I like watching vlogs and sometimes I don't. It depends on the blogger, sometimes they can drag on forever and be really boring. Its better when they are short and to the point.

I make vlogs when I have a bunch of books (5-6 and up) because, for me, it's just so much easier. Also if I have other news with my IMM a vlog makes it easier.

You should do what ever you want and are comfortable with. :)

  4. I like both as well.

For one thing, vlogs are a quick way to get a lot of information out since we listen faster than we read. It's more work for the blogger, but less work for the followers. Also, like Jennifer said, it's a great way to get to know the blogger better.

But I really like reading posts, too. Sometimes I just want some quiet time to read about books, and vlogs just don't cut it when I'm in that mood.

  5. Vlogging sounds like a great idea. Honestly though, I'd be to embarrassed to do one myself. Being a shy person, it's best for me to stuck to just typing posts rather than talking about one. Not that I'm against it or anything, but it's something I'd wait a while to do.

    Great post! :)

  6. Honestly, I can't see myself doing one. Not any time soon anyway. I tried to a Vlog for an IMM and the entire time I stared at the screen and blinked and then forgot what I was saying or felt pretentious. Or started prattling.

As a blog browser, I'm not too keen on vlogs either. If it's IMM or something like that, I'll watch it but otherwise, my attention span is too short to actually sit and watch a person talking. It makes me uncomfortable. More for an actual conversation that just talking into the camera.

  7. I've seen a few vlogs, but I believe I have always skipped over them. I'm not really sure why. Maybe because I want to read about books, not hear about them. Or maybe it's because I'm usually listening to music, so watching a video means stopping and then restarting my music, and I'm apparently too lazy to do that. Maybe I SHOULD start watching them, though.

I've resisted doing vlogs myself because wp.com only allows a few different sites to embed videos. The one I'm most familiar with is youtube, but, unfortunately, you must make public to everyone, which I'm not really willing to do. Is it weird that I think posting a video on my blog is okay, but publishing a video on youtube is not?

I do think that having a grammar vlog would be super cool.

  8. Sorry, but I read faster than I can watch a vlog. I will watch them if they are SHORT -- less than about 4 minutes. I follow too many blogs and don't have the time. Lots of times I just watch the first bit just to see how the person sounds and looks -- but I much prefer reading. Thanks for asking.

  9. I like them. They're fun to watch (when they aren't too long) and they're fun to make and edit (even if it does take hours). That said, I like them as occasional content on a blog, not as the main course. IMM blogs are fun. :)

  10. Hi, just stopping in via the Blog Hop! New follower here.

I like watching vlogs, though I don't do them myself. I can't stomach watching myself on camera! I think they're fun to watch though.

    Have a great weekend!

  11. Regular posts. Have to choose writing/typing over video-ing/talking. I'm not a good talker.

  12. what a great discussion. Seriously. I've been thinking about this too. I like to watch vlogs for the IMM, but only if they are interesting. Some can be really long. But I prefer vlogs over just a picture.

It's scary showing your face to the world! Especially if you have to be entertaining about it. I've been struggling with the pros and cons and come up with more pros. But I'm waiting until after I move to really do something.

I would love to know what you decide. Just email me, if you want or tweet.

  13. I never watch them because I'm usually online in public or with other people around.

  14. I prefer no vlog - I can never watch them as I'm usually perusing during work.
